The Morning After - No Sandman Needed

Since Dabo Swinney took over Clemson, the Tigers are 5-0 against Virginia Tech - two games in Blacksburg, two in the ACC title game, and one in Clemson. Swinney's Tigers have scored 23, 38, 38, 42, and 31 points against Bud Foster's defenses. The Hokies have managed to score more than 17 points only once - last season's ACC Championship Game in which Clemson won 42-35. The other outcomes have been by two scores or more each, including Saturday night's 31-17 Tiger victory. When Dabo and VT meet, the beasts under the bed - as in the familiar "Enter Sandman" lyrics - are the Tigers waiting to put the Hokies to sleep.

1st Quarter
I admit it. I was foolish. I picked against Clemson again. My reasoning wasn't so much that I felt Clemson would play bad, but moreso that Virginia Tech would play up - College Gameday in town, night game at Lane Stadium, game circled since last year's ACC Championship Game, etc., etc.

I was wrong. I should've known. I should've listened. Dabo Swinney has built Clemson into a powerhouse. Clemson is no longer the program it was in the 90s and 00s. This program has won 10 games six straight seasons. It has played in back-to-back National Championship Games, winning the most recent one. It doesn't rebuild when its best playmakers move on. It reloads - for the most part with better players.

Kelly Bryant was once again tremendous in a hostile road environment. Clemson's defense was lights out. Until a garbage time touchdown, the Hokies had one touchdown drive. It lasted all of one play, two yards, thanks to a punt return to the two yard line. Virginia Tech couldn't sustain drives. The Hokies went three-and-out on four of their first five series. The one where they got a first down? They got one first down and punted. Dorian O'Daniel notched his second pick-six, this one to seal the deal. Austin Bryant also came up with a spectacular INT. It warranted Wide Receivers Coach Jeff Scott saying he needed to get Bryant a #WRU T-shirt. Bryant may also petition for a cornerback spot. He lined up on a fourth down out by the numbers and obliterated a wide receiver screen better than any defensive back ever has.

And that's what this team is. It's a team of freak athletes. Ones that play defensive end, but look like linebackers. Running backs with out of this world speed. And receivers with hands you swear have stick'em on them.

I spoke with a great friend of mine with whom I text throughout a lot of the Clemson games and I told him, this team is like a boa constrictor. They slowly wrap around the opponent and begin to squeeze. It's not flashy. There's not a lot happening like the quick strike rattle snake or the dancing cobra. Just a slow, methodical death grip. The more the opponents try to escape with trick plays and all the eye-candy moving shifts, the tighter the grip gets. Ask Louisville. Ask Auburn. And now ask Virginia Tech. The life of their team slowly slipped away. They saw it coming, but there was nothing they could do about it once face-to-face with the snak-, I mean, Tigers.

What a time to be a Tiger, y'all.

2nd Quarter
Let's back up to Friday night when Washington State knocked off USC on the Palouse. Luke Falk out-dueled Sam Darnold. It feels like this win effective eliminates USC from Playoff contention and we're only just now in October. On the other hand, we should be giving some serious thought to Washington State.

This is the second straight year that Mike Leach has Wazzu highly ranked. A loss in the Apple Cup to rival Washington ended hopes of a division title, but we could be well on our way to the Apple Cup winner deciding the Pac-12 North again. Washington looks like the better overall team, right now anyway. However, Washington State put the league on notice that it can take down anyone, including the Pac-12 favorite Trojans.

3rd Quarter
A couple of double-takes when looking at SEC games this weekend. First was Georgia destroying Tennessee in Neyland Stadium, 41-0. The Dawgs did it with a freshman QB, no less. Jake Fromm is playing like anything but a freshman. He's got Georgia all the way up to No. 5 in the rankings and many believe this team has a shot to dethrone Alabama. It certainly appears that UGA will represent the East, because Florida is meh and no one else looks competitive. As for Tennessee, I am shocked we haven't heard of Butch Jones' firing yet. It's inevitable, right? Sorry, but you don't lose on your home field 41-0 the week after chastising the media.

Then there was LSU. It's like the Bayou Bengals saw the Tennessee loss and wanted to one-up the Vols. Troy went into Tiger Stadium at night and tamed the Tigers. A 24-7 game ended 24-21 with Troy still on top, but aside from the late comeback, this one was all Trojans.

So let's recap the past few weeks. Mississippi State curb-stomps LSU 37-7, then gets embarrassed at Georgia 31-3 and at Auburn 49-10. LSU already has a terrible loss, nearly loses at home to Syracuse, then does lose to Troy. Ole Miss has back-to-back losses to Cal and Alabama, the latter by a score of 66-3 after having a bye week to prepare for the Tide. Vandy was the flavor of the week, until it played Alabama (and lost 59-0) and Florida (and lost 38-24). Texas A&M has a pair of seven-point wins over Arkansas and South Carolina, but the Aggies get to host Bama this weekend. The Gamecocks and all-world Jake Bentley scored 17 points to beat La Tech in the last minute 17-16, then scored 17 again and lost to A&M. In fact, they haven't scored more than 17 since Sept. 9.

This is the conference everyone thinks is the best top-to-bottom? Give me a break.

4th Quarter
The jury is still out on Oklahoma State, even though the Cowboys got a much-needed bounce-back win over Texas Tech, their ninth in a row in the series. OSU allowed the Red Raiders to score 14 straight to tie the game late, but got a Mason Rudolph TD with just over a minute to go to pull out the win. The Pokes get a bye week to regroup and refocus before hosting currently winless Baylor and then going on the road to Texas and West Virginia before Bedlam.

The Big 12 is a three-team race with Oklahoma and TCU at the top and OSU waiting in the wings if either of them stumble. OU plays both the Cowboys and Horned Frogs on back-to-back weekends to kickoff November, so we may not know much about the Big 12 race until then. Kansas State and West Virginia are also teams to watch, but both of them have out-of-conference losses holding them back for now.

Overtime
I'm going to use this space this week to blast the poll voters. First, your "votes" mean nothing. The only poll that matters is the one that comes out after the conference championship games. And that one isn't yours, it's the Playoff Committee's, who the folks diligently studying each contending team are doing a much better job ranking them than you are. Is that why you are so petty with your votes? Second, how can you rightfully look at Clemson's rΓ©sumΓ©, compare it to Alabama's, and think, hmm, clearly Alabama is the better team. Forty-four AP Poll voters out of 61 put Alabama on top. That is a change of +9 for Clemson, who only had eight first-place votes last week. This despite Clemson becoming the first team in college football history to beat three Top 15 teams before the calendar flipped to October. This despite Clemson going on the road and taking down the reigning Heisman winner and a hungry Hokie team by a combined 40 points. This despite Alabama's "best win" is over now unranked and 1-2 Florida State.

It's worse in the Coaches Poll, where Clemson gained just two additional first-place votes. Are y'all that scared of what Nick Saban might say at his press conference? Are you too prideful to drop almighty Alabama off their perch because, hey, another team not only looks as good or better, but has proven it on the field with their wins? Good for Bama beating Vanderbilt and Ole Miss like a drum. They should. Vandy was picked sixth in the East. A horrendous division, mind you. And Ole Miss was picked last in the West. So the Crimson Tide winning 59-0 and 66-3 isn't all that shocking, nor impressive.

You know what is? Clemson. Little ole Clemson who, "How are they gonna replace all those offensive stars?" is now 5-0 and owns a 92-44 point margin over THREE Top 15 teams.

Here's what I'll tell you. Keep us at No. 2. Seriously. Go ahead. Bow down to Bama. Praise Saban. Because all you're doing is giving Dabo more locker room material. You're feeding the "nobody believes in us" monster that YOU created. Vegas will probably tell you that Alabama is a 6-7 point favorite over Clemson if they were to play this week. And you'll listen like you always do. Thanks for giving us everything we need to go back to the Playoff again. And make it back to the title game where we will face Alabama again. And for the second time in three games, we'll prove we're better.

But you might believe that either.

We've arrived at the exact week of the season when I picked against Clemson one year ago. I took Louisville to down the Tigers last season. Fortunately, I was wrong. A year later, you'd think I'd've learned my lesson. I simply feel like this Hokie team is different. Yes, Josh Jackson is a freshman quarterback going against the best defensive line in the country. Yes, Clemson is battle-tested, having already defeated two Top-15 teams. Yes, Kelly Bryant played cool, calm, and collected in his first road start. But something feels much different than two weeks ago at Louisville. Maybe I'm being too pessimistic about my team. I don't have an Xs and Os breakdown of why I think Virginia Tech will win. To be honest, Clemson making it through September 4-1 would be a really good thing. If they are 5-0 after Saturday night, we could really be in for Bama-Clemson III. For now, I'll pull the reins back. Hokies 20-17

 (NOTE: After I typed this Thursday evening, I received my IPTAY package in the mail Friday afternoon and am having serious second thoughts. Perhaps that was a good omen? We'll see.)

It would not be surprising to see Penn State have a bit of a hangover following last week's thrilling win at Iowa. Getting Indiana at home for that hangover game helps. Lions 31-16

I'm sensing either a wild shootout on the Palouse or a Friday night stinker. Wazzu is the trendy pick. I like Luke Falk slightly more than Sam Darnold right now. Statistically, Falk's having a much better season than the guy that's getting the Heisman love. I'm just not convinced the Cougs are ready to show out in primetime. Trojans 38-28

6 Washington at Oregon State
Saturday, 8 pm ET, Pac-12
Washington -26.5
Can't see this one being much of a game. The Huskies took it to Colorado last week. Expect even worse for the Beavs. Dawgs 52-7

7 Georgia at Tennessee

Georgia -7.5
The Georgia-Tennessee game has been decided by eight points or less each of the past six years. Expect it to be close. Tennessee is winless in its last 24 games against teams ranked in the Top 10 since 2008. Expect Georgia to make it 0-25. Other Dawgs 34-27

Somehow, this game will be low scoring and close because Big Ten football. Badgers 21-9

Must Watch
14 Miami at Duke

Miami -6.5
Get your weekend started with an enticing matchup between two undefeated ACC Coastal schools. The Hurricanes found new life in the second half last week against Toledo. Duke used a balanced attack to knock off rival North Carolina. Both teams are looking to get a leg up in the standings. As much as I'd like to pick Duke and think David Cutcliffe has this team squarely in contention, Miami has too many weapons. Canes 34-20

 15 Oklahoma State at Texas Tech
Saturday, 8pm ET, Fox
Oklahoma State -10.5
It seems like no matter what, Oklahoma State can't lose to Texas Tech. A night game in Lubbock is no cakewalk, though. Tortillas will be flying as will the football through the air. I'm guessing this one will be pretty high-scoring. Get your popcorn ready. Pokes 58-45

Keep An Eye On
Florida State at Wake Forest
Saturday, 3:30 pm ET, ABC
Florida State -7.5
How odd is it that we have winless Florida State visiting undefeated Wake Forest? FSU's troubles are highly concerning. No one can block up front and I wasn't overly impressed with freshman quarterback James Blackman. Wake may be able to get a steal here, but I'm sticking with the Noles to finally get a W. Noles 27-20

 24 Mississippi State at 13 Auburn

Auburn -9
So maybe Mississippi State isn't that good after all. And maybe Auburn's offense just needed to be completely healthy. Either way, this one could get ugly on the Plains. Auburn 40-17

Oregon -15
Cal took USC to the brink and Oregon had trouble stopping Arizona State. It is full-on #Pac12AfterDark in Eugene. Ducks 45-42

PTT: Prediction Time Thursday - Week 1

A weekend of college football has already come and gone. In case you missed it, the season opened with Colorado State thumping Oregon State 58-27 and concluded with Stanford destroying Rice 62-7 down under, with a few other minor results in between.

A newer-ish format for my weekly picks, but I hope you still enjoy the content. Sometimes this will come out Thursday and sometimes Friday, pending the impact of the Thursday games. Keep in mind, the "Must Watch" games of course include Top 10 teams, but will be listed separately. With an official opening weekend filled with bigtime matchups, let's get right to it.

With all that Bama does return on offense - QB Jalen Hurts, RB Bo Scarbrough, WR Calvin Ridley - and knowing Nick Saban doesn't lose in season openers, I have a hard time going against the Tide (as much as I want to and hope FSU wins). It is a clash of two titans in college football this year and arguably the most anticipated opener of all-time. The ACC is the better conference, but Alabama is the better team. Plus, Alabama doesn't lose in Atlanta - new stadium or not. Tide 23-17

2 Ohio State at Indiana
Thursday, 8 pm ET, ESPN
Ohio State -21
Offensive guru Urban Meyer had to do some soul searching following a 31-0 beatdown in the Fiesta Bowl. He went out and hired former Indiana head coach Kevin Wilson, who never found much success at IU. Doesn't matter now. He has a depth chart stacked with talent. I wouldn't be surprised if the Buckeyes score often and don't stop. Bucks 58-17

4 USC vs. Western Michigan
Saturday, 5:15 pm ET, Pac-12
USC -27
If PJ Fleck were still at Western Michigan, I'd give the former boat rowers a chance. Sam Darnold is atop nearly every preseason Heisman list for good reason. Expect the Trojans to have a field day here. Trojans 47-13

 5 Clemson vs. Kent State

Clemson -40
The Kelly Bryant era begins. Dabo Swinney and Co. are in search of 10-win season No. 7 in a row, but this will be the first without Tajh Boyd or Deshaun Watson. It'll be the Tigers defense that is the strength this season. The Golden Flashes shouldn't put up much of a fight. Tigers 38-6

6 Penn State vs. Akron
Saturday, Noon ET, ABC
Penn State - 30.5
Between Saquon Barkley and Trace McSorley, the Nittany Lions ought to be a fun team to watch. Like many in the Top 10, this is a tune-up game for next weekend when Pittsburgh comes to Happy Valley. Lions 45-10

 7 Oklahoma vs. UTEP
Saturday, 3:30 pm ET, Fox
Oklahoma -43
Sooner Nation officially welcomes in the Lincoln Riley campaign. Baker Mayfield is back for his senior season, but he'll have to find new playmakers to help his cause. Bob Stoops won 10 Big 12 titles in 18 seasons at OU. What's in store for his protΓ©gΓ©? Sooners 63-21

8 Washington at Rutgers
Friday, 8 pm ET, FS1
Washington -27.5
The Huskies were knocked for their out-of-conference schedule a season ago. Going on the road in the Big Ten is generally a step up. At Rutgers, though, might be going in the opposite direction. Jake Browning is fun to watch. U-Dub could be on a crash course to play USC for the Pac-12 title. Huskies 55-13

9 Wisconsin vs. Utah State
Friday, 9 pm ET, ESPN
Wisconsin -27
Finally, Wisconsin opens the season against a non-SEC West opponent (Bama 2015, LSU 2016). The Badgers are a sleeper to crash the Playoff party this season. BENched isn't sold on Bucky just yet, but they'll have no trouble with Utah State. Badgers 38-16

10 Oklahoma State vs. Tulsa
Thursday, 7:30 pm EDT, FS1
Oklahoma State -18
How long will Mike Gundy let his mullet grow? Sadly, that may get more attention than his team, which actually has a chance to run through the Big 12 and reach Playoff status. Mason Rudolph and his main target James Washington are sure to give the Pokes some fire power. OSU has had success, however, when its defense makes plays. Don't be surprised if Tulsa gives the Cowboys fits. Pokes 48-24

Must Watch
Colorado State vs. Colorado (Sports Authority Field at Mile High Stadium, Denver, Colorado)
Friday, 8 pm ET, Pac-12
Colorado -5.5
The Rocky Mountain Showdown gained intrigue when the Rams head-butted Oregon State out of the newly-opened CSU Stadium last Saturday. Colorado State now plays its second-straight Pac-12 foe with in-state rival Colorado in Denver. The Buffs were the Pac-12 South champion a year ago, but stumbled in the postseason, looking non-competitive in the title and bowl games. This is an underrated rivalry that is must-watch TV on Friday night (if you have Pac-12 Network). Buffs 34-30

 11 Michigan vs. 17 Florida (AT&T Stadium, Arlington, Texas)
Saturday, 3:30 pm ET, ABC
Michigan -3.5
Who's starting at quarterback? Neither has announced its starting quarterback in a game of "Let's see who can be the most annoying team." Regardless, we know the Gators will be without at least eight players who have been suspended and Michigan is looking at replacing nearly its entire starting roster from a season ago. Which Jim are you siding with - Harbaugh or McElwain? Wolverines 20-14

 Texas A&M at UCLA
Sunday, 7:30 pm ET, Fox
UCLA -4.5
The Hot Seat Game seems to be starting earlier and earlier each year. A&M's Kevin Sumlin and UCLA's Jim Mora can ill-afford a poor start to the season, making this game all-the-more interesting. The Bruins trailed 24-9 entering the fourth quarter in College Station before sending the game to overtime, where the Aggies pulled out the win a season ago. Is Josh Rosen really the "Rosen One?" Can the Aggies start AND finish a season? Bruins 27-24

 22 West Virginia vs. 21 Virginia Tech (FedEx Field, Landover, Maryland)
Sunday, 7:30 pm ET, ESPN
Virginia Tech -4.5
What used to be an intense Big East rivalry, was halted in the mid-2000s, and is now being resurrected as a neutral site game. The Mountaineers and Hokies don't like each other, plain and simple. Justin Fuente took VT back to 10 wins and showed promise as a first-year coach. But the Hokies must fill a lot of holes on offense. Will Grier, the former Florida QB suspended for PEDs, has won the starting job in Morgantown. Expect a battle to the finish. Hokies 33-27

 25 Tennessee vs. Georgia Tech (Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta, Georgia)
Monday, 8 pm ET, ESPN
Tennessee -3
Paul Johnson loved bragging about being 3-0 against the SEC East in 2016, beating Vandy, Georgia, and Kentucky. The Jackets get a crack at another to open 2017 with Tennessee making the trip to Atlanta as the second game of the Labor Day extravaganza to open the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium. I don't know what to think about either team. They both are starting new quarterbacks and neither ever lives up to preseason hype. I'll give UT the edge for having all summer to figure out how to slow down Johnson's triple-option offense. Vols 26-20

Not dire, but eager to see Texas under Tom Herman. Horns 31-20

NC State vs. South Carolina (Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, North Carolina)

South Carolina -4.5
NC State will be physical on defense. South Carolina has playmakers on offense. A good one to have for the "last channel" button. Pack 27-24

Appalachian State at 15 Georgia
Saturday, 6:15 pm ET, ESPN
Georgia -14.5
Last season, the Mountaineers took another SEC East favorite (Tennessee) to overtime. Could they do the same here? Dawgs 38-17

 16 Louisville vs. Purdue (Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis, Indiana)
Saturday, 7:30 pm ET, Fox
Louisville -24.5
Look, I firmly believe Deshaun Watson was the best player in CFB last year. But Lamar Jackson was a close second. Any chance to see his electrifying style of play can't be passed up. Cards 59-27

 BYU vs. 13 LSU (Mercedes-Benz Superdome, New Orleans, Louisiana)
Saturday, 9:30 pm ET, ESPN
BYU -14
The game has been moved from Houston to New Orleans, so it will be even more pro-LSU than before, though to no fault of LSU's. BYU struggled with Portland State in the opener, winning 20-6. Were they looking ahead? Also, Derrius Guice will remind a lot of folks of Leonard Fournette in a hurry. Tigers 27-20

Four Shades of Red

You've read the book - or at least heard of it. Fifty Shades of Grey is one of the top selling books of all-time.

The Clemson Tigers could write their own book, a twist on the original. As Dabo Swinney said during Clemson's championship celebration, “I told the team all year long, you have the pen in your hands and we write the story, we write the ending.”

 That ending would include the final four chapters of the Tigers' National Championship run. The final four games of the 2016-17 season includes wins over South Carolina, Virginia Tech, Ohio State and Alabama. All four teams a shade of red and all four wins delivered a championship.

 Garnet

 This chapter is the beatdown of epic proportions the Tigers put on the Gamecocks. Final score: Clemson 56, South Carolina 7. The talent gap on the field was evident. Nothing South Carolina could do was going to keep the game close.

Deshaun Watson threw six touchdown passes. Mike Williams caught six balls for 100 yards and three touchdowns in the first half. Clemson gained 622 yards of offense, while the defense gave up 218. The starters were removed late in the third quarter.

 The win was the third straight in the series and pushed Clemson's overall series lead to 68-42-4. Watson delivered on a promise he made in high school that he would never lose to the Gamecocks. He finishes his career a perfect 3-0 record with an average margin of victory 24 points. 

 Of course, this wasn't a normal game. This was an in-state rivalry with plenty of hatred on both sides. A shouting match broke out during pregame warmups between the teams. Swinney called a timeout with his starters on the field late in the fourth quarter to honor the seniors one last time in Death Valley, but the Gamecocks didn't take too kindly to that. There's a new motto for South Carolina - never again - referring to the pain felt during the loss. 

 Championship won: State. Clemson claimed the Palmetto Bowl trophy.

 Maroon

 The next chapter sees the Tigers head south to Orlando, Fla., for the ACC Championship against a salty Virginia Tech squad. A win puts Clemson into the College Football Playoff. Plenty was on the line and the Hokies were seeking a strong finish to an unexpected ACC Coastal Championship in Justin Fuente's debut season.

 Clemson's offense was clicking early and often, jumping out to leads of 14-0 and 35-14. Watson fired on all cylinders with 288 yards and three touchdowns passing, while rushing for 85 yards and two more scores.

However, the Virginia Tech offense wouldn't be held down for long. The Hokies, led by JuCo transfer quarterback Jerod Evans, hit their stride and closed the gap late. Consecutive scores by VT made it 35-28 early in the fourth quarter. Watson led the Tigers on a scoring drive to extend the lead back to 14, but the Hokies quickly scored again to get within seven.

 Then, with Virginia Tech driving to tie it, Cordrea Tankersley picked off his second pass of the game to seal the deal. Clemson won the game 42-35. Watson earn his second straight Championship Game Player of the Game honors and the Tigers claimed back-to-back conference titles for the first time since winning three straight from 1986-88.

Clemson was selected the No. 2 team in the College Football Playoff with a 12-1 record. Their opponent, No. 3 Ohio State, which finished the season 11-1. The two teams were matched up in the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl, one of the two semifinal sites this season.

 Controversy over the Buckeyes' selection was plentiful. Ohio State finished tied with Penn State atop the Big Ten East Division, but the Nittany Lions went to the conference title game because of their head-to-head win over OSU. Penn State won the conference championship, but was left out because of a September loss to Pittsburgh.

Many thought Urban Meyer and Ohio State would be out to prove they belonged. That never came to fruition. The Buckeyes struggled to move the ball against Clemson's stout defense and missed two field goals in the first quarter. Slowly, but surely, the Tigers began picking up yards and found the end zone once. Then again. And again in the second half. When it was all over, the scoreboard read 31-0.

 Like a boa constrictor, Clemson squeezed the life out of the Ohio State sideline. Once again, it was a night Watson would not be stopped. He accounted for three scores and never wavered after two interceptions. Clemson's defense, though, was the story, blanking the Buckeyes for the first time in over two decades. The Tigers racked up 11 tackles for loss, three sacks, and held Ohio State's vaunted rushing attack - which entered averaging nearly 260 yards on the ground per game - to just 88 yards.

Championship won: Bowl and Semifinal. Clemson claimed the Fiesta Bowl trophy along with a CFB Playoff Semifinal award.

This was the rematch many predicted in July and August. Alabama was the overwhelming pick as the No. 1 team in the land. Just on the Crimson Tide's heels were the Tigers, selected No. 2 in the preseason. 

 Bama rolled to a 14-0 lead and seemed to have the game where it wanted. Watson was still trying to figure out the flow of the game. The Tigers didn't have an answer for running back Bo Scarbrough. Then, a short screen pass to Deon Cain went for 44 yards and opened things up. Clemson scored to cut the deficit in half before the intermission.

The second half was full of spectacular plays on both sides. Honestly, it could be a book all on its own. From Hunter Renfrow's touchdown saving tackle after a Clemson fumble to OJ Howard streaking down the sideline uncovered again to several Mike Williams athletic catches to Jordan Leggett's acrobatic grab to a Jalen Hurts' go-ahead TD with two minutes remaining to the final punctuation mark, a Renfrow touchdown with one second left. Three crucial drives were made in the final five minutes of the game. Each resulting score caused the lead to change hands. 

It was a fitting end for Watson to hit Renfrow for the game-winning score. It was fitting that Clemson ran an onside kick and recovered it. It was fitting that Watson took the game's final snap for a kneel down. 

 Clemson won its first title in 35 years. The Tigers scored 35 points. Clemson won by a final margin of 35-31 - four points. The Tigers' MVP wears No. 4. The storybook ending was written. As Swinney said, “And what an ending they wrote Monday night in Tampa.”

 Championship won: National Championship. Clemson caps the season as the unanimous No. 1 team in both the AP and Coaches Polls. That earned the Tigers the CFB Playoff National Championship trophy and the Coaches Crystal Ball trophy.

The Morning After... Back-to-back

A short and sweet TMA today, as the final ranking for the CFB Playoff will be announced at noon ET. BENched will have a reaction piece and a look ahead to the Playoff and New Year's Six bowls.

1) Earlier Saturday, I texted a good buddy of mine and said I had trouble sleeping because I kept having the thought that Clemson would lose to Virginia Tech. His response was simple, "Take a deep breath and remember we have #4." How could I be so silly? Deshaun Watson (that'd be the #4 he was talking about) is the best player in football. Period. He proved it again Saturday night on another big stage, claiming the ACC Championship for the second straight year and becoming the first player ever to win consecutive ACC Championship Game MVPs. He did so with 288 passing yards, 85 rushing yards and five touchdowns (three pass, two rush). Clemson fans have had the pleasure of watching DW4 for the last three years and if we ever doubt our Tigers, we should all keep in mind that he's on our side.

2) "All we need is an opportunity. Once we get an opportunity, we're going to take full advantage of it. ... We're going to go for that natty." Clemson is rolling into the Playoff and Watson's quote tells me the Tigers have had their eyes on this prize all year long. Now that the opportunity is here - or we assume it is - the rest of the country should look out. Clemson is coming.

3) Clemson has now scored 35+ points in six straight games. The Tigers have scored 30 or more in 10  of their 13 games. ... Clemson has won a record 16 ACC Championships, breaking a previous tie with Florida State. ... The back-to-back titles are the first for Clemson in 28 years (CU won three in a row from 1986-88). ... The win was Clemson's 10th over a bowl eligible team this season - the most in the nation. The Tigers played a record 11 bowl eligible teams, going 10-1. ... The Tigers' 12-1 record is tied for the second most wins in school history. In 1981, the Tigers finished 12-0 to win the National Championship. Clemson went 14-1 in 2015, falling short in the title game.

4) My hat is off to Virginia Tech. The Hokies are a fun club to watch. Jerod Evans is a talented quarterback and he has some really good weapons around him. He has some things to work on, but the Hokies are scary with him back there. Bud Foster is one of the best defensive minds in the business. There wasn't much he was going to do to slow down the Tiger train, but Foster dialed up some things that confused the heck out of the Clemson offense and disrupted its rhythm. Justin Fuente has ignited a fire in Blacksburg that is going to rage on for a while. Expect a lot of Clemson-VT and FSU-VT matchups in the ACCFCG in the near future.

5) Oklahoma won Bedlam in impressive fashion, 38-20. The Cowboys scored to go ahead 17-10 with 1:42 to go before halftime. The Sooners marched down the field and scored in 1:10 to tie the game. OSU returned the ensuing kickoff near midfield. The Pokes ran one play and did not call their final timeout, instead opting to go into halftime tied. OU dominated the second half 21-3. When the game was within 11, Mike Gundy called for a run play on 3rd and long to set up a field goal to cut it to an eight-point deficit. OSU missed the field goal and Sooner running back Joe Mixon went 79 yards on the next play to ice the game. Oklahoma now leads the Bedlam series 86-18-7 and is likely headed to the Sugar Bowl to face off against Auburn. Oklahoma State is likely going to San Antonio for the Alamo Bowl against either Colorado or USC.

6) The only other conference championship game that was worth watching was the Big Ten, and even it looked like a blowout early. Wisconsin jumped all over Penn State, leading 28-7 late in the second quarter. If you read BENched, you knew this nugget: Penn State is a second half team. The Nittany Lions scored just before half to cut the lead to 28-14, then outscored the Badgers 24-3 in the second half. Penn State, a two-loss team, claimed the Big Ten Championship out of the East Division. That same division has Ohio State (which its only loss is to Penn State) and Michigan (which blew out PSU 49-10 way back in September). Are the Nittany Lions Rose Bowl bound or Playoff bound? Time will tell.

7) Washington crushed Colorado 41-10 Friday night to claim the Pac-12. The Huskies seem to be a lock for the Playoff at 12-1 with the conference title. But the Huskies are holding their breath, as their strength of schedule and many other metrics are not in their favor. ... Alabama throttled Florida 54-16 to win the SEC again and finish 13-0. Florida actually looked like it was going to be in the fight early, marching down the field and scoring to go up 7-0. Two interceptions - one a pick-six - and a blocked punt for a TD gave Bama a lead despite the Tide having minus-7 yards. They did not look back.

PTF: Prediction Time Friday - Week 14 (Championship Week)

Another month of football gone. Hard to believe we've reached the end of the college football season. Championship Week presents a whole new season in itself. Plenty is on the line for all the championship games - Playoff positioning, New Year's Six Bowls, bragging rights (in Bedlam). It's time to man up or shut up. As for BENched, we've had a good, not great, season of picks. Rivalry Week pulled a fast one with several upets. But we're in the championship phase. Just like these games, this is when it counts most.

MAC Championship (Ford Field in Detroit, Mich.)
Ohio vs. No. 17 Western Michigan (Line: Western Michigan -17)
On the verge of a 13-0 season, Western Michigan is staring a New Year's Six Bowl in the face. It's right there for the taking and all that stands in its way is Ohio, which has lost four games, but all have been decided by single digits. The Broncos, on the other hand, have had one game decided by single digits. In fact, it was a single-digit win (22-21) at Northwestern to start the season. No slowing down the boats. They can row right on down to the Cotton Bowl after this one. Boat Rowers 41-24

GAME OF THE WEEK

No. 8 Colorado vs. No. 4 Washington (Line: Washington -7.5)
Implications in this one are larger than the Pacific Ocean. Washington knows it must win the Pac-12 to be considered for the CFB Playoff. The Huskies have had a fantastic year, but despite the 11-1 record, they are just 1-1 against the current Top 25. Colorado can creep into the conversation by knocking off No. 4. The Buffaloes are the turnaround team of the year, led by Sefo Liufau. Colorado's defense may be the best the Huskies have faced, but UW's defense is far and away the best the Buffs have seen. Huskies 27-21

Saturday

AAC Championship (Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md.)
Temple at No. 19 Navy (Line: Navy -3)
Navy has a chance - albeit slim - to earn a New Year's Six berth. Ironically, Navy needs the boats to stop rowing and sink.  The Midshipmen need a Western Michigan loss and to beat Temple for that conversation to begin. If the Broncos win tonight, which BENched predicts, all Navy can play for is a conference championship. That'd be tremendous for our nation's Naval Academy. Middies 34-20

 Big 12 Championship - Bedlam (Oklahoma leads 85-18-7)
No. 10 Oklahoma State at No. 9 Oklahoma (Line: Oklahoma -11)
One of the few regular season games remaining on the schedule, Bedlam figures to live up to its name. The Sooners and Cowboys will go toe-to-toe with the Big 12 title on the line for the fourth time in the last six years. Oklahoma has a dynamic offense that is unstoppable with Baker Mayfield leading the charge. Samaje Perine and Joe Mixon are a great one-two punch in the backfield, but Dede Westbrook is a sensational wide receiver. Opposite OU is Oklahoma State's high-octane offense that has recently found a running game. Both defenses are, for lack of a better word, awful. This one will have points galore. Ponies and Wagons 55-45

SEC Championship (Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Ga.)
No. 1 Alabama vs. No. 15 Florida (Line: Alabama -24)
Unlike the matchup above, defense won't be optional in the Georgia Dome. Alabama boasts the nation's best and Florida isn't far behind. Alabama didn't allow a touchdown in four games in November. Florida has no offense, so this one shouldn't be close. Tide 33-3

ACC Championship (Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Fla.)
No. 3 Clemson vs. No. 23 Virginia Tech (Line: Clemson -10)
Clemson has been on a tear since its loss to Pitt three weeks ago. Actually, the Tigers' offense has been on a tear since their Oct. 29 game at Florida State. In the fives game since, Clemson has scored 37, 54, 42, 35 and 56 points. Virginia Tech always has a tough defense with Bud Foster sailing that ship. And the Hokies' offense has seen an uptick with new head man Justin Fuente and quarterback Jerod Evans. But Clemson looks to be on a mission and VT won't be able to keep up the whole game. Tigers 41-17

Big Ten Championship (Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind.)
No. 6 Wisconsin vs. No. 7 Penn State (Line: Wisconsin -3)
The storylines out of the Big Ten are numerous. Ohio State allegedly is a lock for the Playoff. Penn State, which beat Ohio State, could win the Big Ten and be left out of the Playoff. Wisconsin is most likely left out even if it wins. These scenarios are all barring what may or may not happen in other conferences, like the ACC and Pac-12. There's little arguing that the Big Ten is the best conference this season, but whether its champion slides into the Top 4 is a mystery. As for the game, Penn State is a second half team, so ignore whatever may happen in the first half. Wisconsin has a stout defense and will pose problems for the Nittany Lions. Expect this one to be close and low-scoring. Nittany Lions 16-9

The Morning After... Another State Championship!

1) What Clemson and South Carolina fans witnessed Saturday night was complete and utter domination. One team was focused, talented and eager to put a whippin' on its rival. The other just wanted to get out of dodge as soon as possible. The Gamecocks could not match up with the Tigers man-for-man.

2) Deshaun Watson likely finishes his career in Death Valley the way he started it. In Watson's first career home start, he threw six TD passes against North Carolina. Saturday night, he tossed six against South Carolina. The young man has had a career worthy of every award and record he's earned. I've been critical of him and I don't apologize for that. There are still flaws in his game, but at this time, it's just nitpicking at things I wish were perfect. Well, Deshaun Watson ain't perfect. Nobody is or ever will be. But Watson is as close to perfect as Clemson's ever had at the QB position.

3) A year ago, Mike Williams stood on the sidelines with a neck brace. Williams might want to get his back checked out this time as Gamecock defenders dangled off him all night. He made NFL-type catches and showed by Mel Kiper has him as the No. 1 WR in the upcoming NFL Draft. His first TD was a thing of beauty. His second was unreal. Williams carried the Carolina defender eight yards into the end zone. You have to see it to understand how awesome of a highlight that was. Williams was a man among boys.
4) Incredible defensive performance by the Tigers to boot. USC freshman QB Jake Bentley looked like he belonged in high school. He finished 7-of-17 for 41 yards and an interception. Bentley only played one half, supposedly injuring his knee. Will Muschamp said there was nothing wrong with him other than he wasn't comfortable pushing off throwing, but Muschamp didn't want to put him back in the game. The Gamecocks had 218 yards, were 4-for-14 on third downs, and had just 14 first downs (Clemson had 41). Again, there was very little South Carolina could do to find any mismatches on the field. The Tigers were just better all around.

 5) I'm going to do a little bragging here, and also set the record straight. I've heard nothing but a bunch of whiny sour grapes coming out of the mouths of Gamecocks - coaches, players and fans. You got beat. Deal with it. Stop trying to act like you didn't do any trash talking all week. Stop trying to act like you didn't rub it in during your five-game winning streak. Stop trying to act like your players are perfect little angels and Clemson's are the scum of the earth.

Clemson's players didn't say much this week and let their play on the field do the talking. They very well could have said a lot, considering they'd won two in a row in the series. After the game, a third straight win, they didn't hold back. And good for them. They're right. South Carolina has been, is, and always will be the little brother in this state. Clemson does run the state. The 56-7 thrashing makes that pretty clear. As does the 68-42-4 series record. Get over it.

6) Michigan and Ohio State might have been a good game that went to double-overtime, but color me unimpressed. It was 17-17 at the end of regulation. Neither offense looked competent. Ohio State's kicker missed two chipshot field goals. Michigan fumbled at the one-yardline and threw two costly INTs - one returned for a TD and one that set up a short TD drive. Ohio State was 3-of-16 on third downs. Michigan had 91 rushing yards (2.1 yards per rush). I realize it was a huge game with big ramifications, but neither team was impressive. The rest of the nation will tell you it was a classic - and it was - and that both teams are deserving of high rankings and praise. That's great. Just not from this guy.

7) Rivalry weekend produced a lot of thrills and upsets that no one saw coming. NC State knocked off North Carolina, Missouri over Arkansas, Air Force over Boise State, Texas Tech over Baylor, and Arizona over Arizona State ... All of those took place before Saturday. Then, there was Georgia Tech over Georgia, Kentucky over Louisville, Mississippi State over Ole Miss, Oregon State over Oregon and Vandy over Tennessee. Gotta love it.

8) The Heisman race is back open. Here are the serious contenders: Lamar Jackson, Louisville; Deshaun Watson, Clemson; Dalvin Cook, Florida State; Baker Mayfield, Oklahoma; Dede Westbrook, Oklahoma. That's it. Jackson has stumbled his past two games to allow the other contenders to close the gap. I still think he will be the winner, but it won't be as large of a margin as previously thought.

9) The ACC finished 3-1 over the SEC for the second straight season in in-state rivalries. Over the past three seasons, the ACC teams (Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech and Louisville) are a combined 10-2 against South Carolina, Florida, Georgia and Kentucky. ... Every Power 5 conference has a championship game next weekend - four actual championship games (ACC, Big Ten, Pac-12, SEC) and one by luck (Big 12). ... The Playoff Committee ranking comes out Tuesday and I will warn everyone now: Michigan will be ranked No. 4 this week. The Committee isn't likely to drop Michigan behind Washington at this point because the overall body of work favors the Wolverines. And a double-overtime road loss to the No. 2 team in the country doesn't do much to warrant a big drop anyway. However, conference championships are not factored in this week. After this coming Saturday, they will be and that's where Michigan (and Ohio State) will likely drop if Clemson and Washington win their conferences.

10) After Virginia Tech's 52-10 over Virginia, Hokies defensive end Ken Ekanem said, "This was a statement game, to tell Clemson that we're coming." Bring it, turkeys. Beat Virginia Tech.

PTF: Prediction Time Friday - Week 13 (Rivalry Week)

Savor the leftovers and kick back on the couch. Rivalry Week is here! This is the best week of the college football season, as hate fills the air. Your neighbors, your friends, your co-workers are either with you or against you. There's nothing like these heated games. Throw out the records, throw out the statistics. With 365 days of bragging on the line, expect the unexpected. After this, we'll be on to championship weekend. But there are lots of scores to settle. Onward with the picks!

Friday

 NC State at North Carolina - Carolina-State Game (UNC leads 66-33-6)
(Line: North Carolina -10.5)
Not the best game of the weekend, but a solid rivalry here. NC State needs a win to become bowl eligible. Carolina needs a win to have a chance at the Coastal Division title (the Heels still have to wait on the Virginia Tech game on Saturday). The Wolfpack have come oh so close several times this season. The difference in this one will be UNC quarterback Mitch Trubisky. Heels 27-21

Arkansas at Missouri - Battle Line Rivalry (Mizzou leads 4-3)
(Line: Arkansas -8)
This has never been much of a rivalry, but the SEC is trying to make it one. The Razorbacks knocked off Mississippi State on the road last weekend, a first in the Beilema era. Mizzou pretty much stinks. Hogs 34-17

No. 16 Nebraska at Iowa - Heroes Game (Nebraska leads 29-14-3)
(Line: Iowa -1.5)
An intriguing game for Nebraska as the Huskers need a win and a Wisconsin loss to clinch the Big Ten West. Iowa has already taken down Michigan a few weeks ago. The Huskers are ranked, but the Hawkeyes are favored. Huskers 23-20

 TCU at Texas - (Texas leads 62-23-1)
(Line: Texas -3)
Is Charlie Strong out or is he staying? Will his players play for him or are they tired of the season-long drama? TCU is coming off its worse loss in a long, long time, so the Horned Frogs might be desperate. So might the Longhorns trying to either save Strong's job, or send him off on a positive note. Both teams clinch bowl eligibility with a win, though TCU has one more opportunity next weekend. Horns 45-34

 No. 5 Washington at No. 23 Washington State - Apple Cup (UW leads 70-32-6)
(Line: Washington -6)
The most interesting Apple Cup probably ever. Wazzu hosting UW with the Pac-12 North on the line. The Huskies are arguably the more talented team, but the Cougs are led by the unheralded Luke Falk. Washington needs the win to remain in Playoff contention. WSU would love nothing more than to spoil that opportunity. What a game this should be on the Palouse! Huskies 38-37

 Baylor vs. Texas Tech - at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas - BUTT Bowl (Baylor leads 37-36-1)

OK, so it's called the BUTT Bowl unofficially - Baylor's initials BU added to Texas Tech's TT. But that's just too funny not to use here! Anyway, the Bears have lost four straight since starting 6-0 this season. Their last three losses have come by 21 points or more each. Texas Tech was just blown out by Iowa State 66-10. What in the world is going on in Lubbock? Bears 44-42

 Arizona State at Arizona - Territorial Cup ('Zona leads 48-40-1)
(Line: Arizona State -3)
The Wildcats and Sun Devils duel in the desert for a rivalry lacking intensity this season. Arizona State can only become bowl eligible with a win. Arizona is just 2-9. No gold coming out of the Copper State this time. ASU 31-26

GAME OF THE WEEK

No. 3 Michigan at No. 2 Ohio State - The Game (Michigan leads 58-47-6)
(Line: Ohio State -6.5)
This one is known as The Game and this year, it is the game of the weekend. No. 3 Michigan pays a visit to arch-rival No. 2 Ohio State. With the winner eyeing a Playoff berth, this one means more than most years. In 2006, a similar event occurred in Columbus and the Buckeyes emerged with a thrilling win. Michigan will likely be without starting QB Wilton Speight. A win sends the Wolverines to the Big Ten Championship Game. Ohio State can only win and hope Penn State loses later in the day. Still, the Buckeyes would be in the conversation for a Top 4 spot. All signs point to a Buckeye win, creating chaos for the Playoff Committee. Bucks 30-17

Georgia Tech at Georgia - Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate (UGA leads 65-40-5) 
(Line: Georiga -4)
Mark Richt ain't on the sidelines in red and black anymore. He coached UGA to a 13-2 record against the Yellow Jackets. The Bulldogs, now under Kirby Smart, defeated Auburn and North Carolina, but have a loss to Vanderbilt and narrow wins over Nicholls, Missouri and UL-Lafayette. Tech bounced back from a three-win season to reach seven so far, including an upset in Blacksburg over Virginia Tech. Outside of that, however, the Jackets have basically beaten everybody they should've and lost to everyone better. Dawgs 20-17

Kentucky at No. 11 Louisville - Governor's Cup (Series tied 14-14)
(Line: Louisville -26)
A year ago, Louisville fell behind Kentucky 24-7 before storming back with 31 straight points to win 38-24. Lamar Jackson is the Heisman front-runner and the Cards had an extra couple days to digest their loss at Houston. I doubt this one is close, but we all know anything can happen in these rivalry games. Cards 56-28

 Virginia at Virginia Tech - Commonwealth Cup (VT leads 55-37-5)
(Line: Virginia Tech -18.5)
All the Hokies have to do is beat Virginia and they'll travel to Orlando next week for the ACC Championship. Seems pretty easy, as VT has dominated this series, winning 12 in a row. Three of the last four, however, have been by four points or less. Lane Stadium will get to celebrate a Coastal championship along with winning the Commonwealth Cup. Hokies 34-13

 Michigan State at No. 7 Penn State - Land Grant Trophy (MSU leads 15-14-1)

If Ohio State beats Michigan and that game ends just prior to kickoff in Happy Valley, the whole stadium will let James Franklin and the Nittany Lions know. All Penn State has to do is take down three-win Sparty. MSU gave Michigan and Ohio State fits, although both of those games were in East Lansing. Penn State is seeking its first-ever trip to the Big Ten Championship Game. Nittany Lions 24-14

 No. 13 Auburn at No. 1 Alabama - Iron Bowl (Bama leads 44-35-1)
(Line: Alabama -17)
Two weeks ago, this looked like a clash of SEC West titans once again. Then, Auburn looked inept at Georgia. Alabama doesn't have to win this game, but you and I both know Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide faithful feel otherwise. Both defenses are tough, but the edge has to go to Bama and its ability to wear teams down over four quarters. Tide 34-21

 Mississippi State at Ole Miss - Egg Bowl (Ole Miss leads 63-43-6)
(Line: Ole Miss -8)
The Egg Bowl has lost some luster due to both teams fading fast in the last year. An Egg Bowl win gives Ole Miss another bowl trip, while Mississippi State would love to have the Rebels staying home for the holidays too. Freshman Shea Patterson will be baptized by fire in this heated rivalry. He could be the key to an Ole Miss win. Rebs 28-24

 Minnesota at No. 6 Wisconsin - Paul Bunyan's Axe (Minnesota leads 59-58-8)
(Line: Wisconsin -14.5)
It's simple for Wisconsin: Win and clinch the Big Ten West. Minnesota has been solid all year, but the Badgers are just too good a team and are playing at home. Camp Randall will be rocking and Wisconsin will get the Axe. Badgers 41-24

 Notre Dame at No. 12 USC - Jeweled Shillelagh (ND leads 46-36-5)
(Line: USC -17.5)
These two teams went in opposite directions following Week 1 losses. Remember when USC lost 52-6 to Alabama and began the year 1-3? The Trojans now find themselves in contention for the Pac-12 South, or at the very least a potential berth in a New Year's Six Bowl. That's all thanks to the emergence of quarterback Sam Darnold. As for the Irish, who lost 50-47 in double-OT at Texas, the season ends with this one. ND is 4-7, will miss out on a bowl, has rumors swirling about its head coach, and to top it off was just forced by the NCAA to vacate wins from the 2012 and 2013 seasons. What a nightmare of a fall in South Bend. Trojans 42-20

 Oregon at Oregon State - Civil War (Oregon leads 63-46-10)
(Line: Oregon -3)
Aside from the Ducks pulling off a shocker in Utah last weekend, the Civil War has turned into a Civil Pillowfight. Oregon and Oregon State have combined for a 7-15 record. Bragging rights for the next 365 days are all that is on the line. Ducks 31-23

 South Carolina at No. 4 Clemson - Palmetto Bowl (Clemson leads 67-42-4)
(Line: Clemson -24)
A fine season for the Gamecocks in Year 1 of the Will Muschamp era. Despite true freshman Jake Bentley leading the charge the last five games (S.Car is 4-1 in that stretch and became bowl eligible), South Carolina might be in over its head in Death Valley. Bentley's only road start was a miserable one at Florida in which the Cocks scored seven points and gained just 256 yards. Clemson is looking for a third straight win in the series and to keep its Playoff hopes on track. This line is strange, considering the Tigers' last two wins in the series have been by a combined 23 points. Deshaun Watson needs to be mistake free. If he is, look out. Tigers 38-24

 No. 22 Utah at No. 9 Colorado - Rumble in the Rockies (Colorado leads 31-28-3)
(Line: Colorado -10)
Utah was about an inch away from making this a de facto Pac-12 South championship game. The Utes loss to Oregon was heartbreaking. Now, they travel to resurgent Colorado. The Buffaloes are having  a tremendous turnaround season and could win 10 games for the first time since 2001. Quarterback Sefo Liufau is fun to watch. Colorado looks to earn its first trip to the Pac-12 Championship Game. Buffs 37-20

 No. 15 Florida at No. 14 Florida State - Sunshine Showdown (Florida leads 34-24-2)
(Line: Florida State -7.5)
When the Noles and Gators get together, expect fireworks. A scrum typically breaks out during pregame and the trash talking goes on all night. Florida is coming off an emotional win at LSU to secure the SEC East crown again. FSU has won three straight, posting 45 points in back-to-back games. The Noles seniors can accomplish something no other senior class has: finish their careers 8-0 against Miami and Florida. Florida State handled the Gators in The Swamp last year, 27-2. It won't be that bad, but the Noles should take care of business. Noles 31-13

PTT: Prediction Time Thursday - Week 8

Past the midway point in the college football season, we are finding out where teams stand. Still some matchups to determine much of the landscape, so buckle up. This is the time of year when things get fun! Time to make some Clemson bye week picks, which means a few more games than normal.

Thursday

Miami at Virginia Tech (Line: Virginia Tech -6)
A week ago, this looked like it could have been an epic ACC Coastal showdown. Now it's essentially an elimination game from the division race. The Hokies should get a boost from the return to a Thursday night game at Lane Stadium. Hokies 24-17

 BYU at No. 14 Boise State (Line: Boise State -7)
The nightcap of the Thursday double-header is a classic Mountain Time rivalry. BYU and Boise have been battling to be the non-Power 5 leader for years. The two running backs in this game are studs. I'd take Boise State QB Brett Rypien over BYU's Taysom Hill right now. Slight edge to Boise on The Blue. Broncos 34-24

 Friday

Oregon at Cal (Line: Cal -3)
The what-could-have-been game. These two teams have combined for five wins, with the Ducks falling from the sky and the Bears just meh. Oregon has no defense and is a loss away from Phil Knight picking up the phone to bring Chip Kelly back. *Ring ring*. Bears 47-30

Saturday

NC State at No. 7 Louisville (Line: Louisville -19.5)
BENched is still unsure how Kyle Bambard missed that kick. Huge chance for NC State to bounce back this week. Lamar Jackson needs to get back on track after a so-so performance last week against Duke. Cards 41-28

 No. 10 Wisconsin at Iowa (Line: Wisconsin -3.5)
The Badgers have a pair of seven-point losses to the No. 2 and No. 3 teams in the land. Lucky for UW, those two teams are in the B1G East. Now they travel west to take on an underwhelming Iowa squad. Badgers 31-14

 Texas at Kansas State (Line: Kansas State -2.5)
K-State owns Texas. For whatever reason, the purple 'Cats just know how to get it done against the Longhorns. So why go against that? Plus, a buddy of mine can't stand it when I don't pick Kansas State. This one's for you. Snydercats 27-24

 Syracuse at Boston College (Line: Boston College -4.5)
Yes, you read that line right. The team that hasn't won an ACC game in its last 11 tries is the a 4.5-point favorite over a team that just beat Virginia Tech by 14. Something's up... Orange 35-17

No. 22 North Carolina at Virginia (Line: North Carolina -8.5)
Which Tar Heel team shows up this week - the one that got blown out at home by the Hokies or the one that did work at Miami? Either way, the winner of this game controls the Coastal Division. Yes, really, Virginia could be in control after Saturday. Heels 44-27

 Colorado at Stanford (Line: Stanford -2.5)
Two Pac-12 teams with two losses apiece headed in different directions. With a win, the Buffs become bowl eligible for the first time since 2007. "The Rise" is real. Buffs 33-21

 TCU at No. 12 West Virginia (Line: West Virginia -6)
We will likely keep asking if West Virginia is for real until the Mountaineers go the entire season unbeaten. The Horned Frogs head to the hills for an intriguing Big 12 battle. Dana Holgorsen is probably gonna shotgun another Red Bull on TV with his team winning big again. 'Neers 48-38

No. 6 Texas A&M at No. 1 Alabama (Line: Alabama -18)
An 18-point spread for the game of the week? Better question, is Alabama really that good? Scary good, in fast. A lot has been made of Trevor Knight, the former Sooner who beat Alabama in the 2014 Sugar Bowl, getting another crack at the Tide. This Tide, though, is a different kind of elephant. Defensive end Myles Garrett will pressure freshman QB Jalen Hurts more than he's seen in his young career. But Alabama is too much for the Aggies in the end. Tide 35-24

No. 19 Utah at UCLA (UCLA -7)
Make or break kind of game for Jim Mora at UCLA. A loss to Utah could lead to a bowl-less season. Meanwhile, Utah will do its best to not peak ahead to next week's major throwdown with No. 5 Washington. Trap game in the Rose Bowl? Utes 24-21

 No. 17 Arkansas at No. 21 Auburn (Line: Auburn -9.5)
Austin Allen is one tough son-of-a-gun. His grit has been tested the past two weeks against Alabama and Ole Miss. Auburn had the week off to decide if it wants to use the QB carousel it began the season with or go with Sean White like it has in three straight wins. The winner on the Plains remains close behind the top tier of Bama/A&M. Hogs 30-24

No. 16 Oklahoma at Texas Tech (Line: Oklahoma -14)
It won't be a warm welcome back to Lubbock for Baker Mayfield. Tortillas, batteries and who knows what else will be thrown his way. Those Raider fans are harsh. Too bad their defense is softer than a rabbit's ears. Ponies and Wagons 62-20

 No. 2 Ohio State at Penn State (Line: Ohio State -19.5)
The whiteout in Happy Valley is one of the best atmospheres in the game. But it won't be enough to slow down the ultra-talented Buckeyes. Urban Meyer has a one-track mind: He wants Saban. Buckeyes 45-13

 No. 23 Ole Miss at No. 25 LSU (Line: LSU -5.5)
Ole Miss fell to 3-3 and is still ranked. It's absurd and both the AP voters and coaches who put together their polls should forfeit their votes just for that. The Fighting Orgeron's are playing well, almost like a team that has a ton of talent and a solid game plan. Hmm, no wonder Les Miles isn't coaching in Baton Rouge anymore. Bayou Bengals 31-27

 Washington State at Arizona State (Line: Washington State -7.5)
Luke Falk is proving to be a great fit for Mike Leach's offense. The Cougs could be a legitimate threat to Washington in the Apple Cup at the end of the season. The Sun Devils are coming off a beat down at Colorado. Tough to follow that up with the Air Raid from the Paluse. Wazzu 38-28
